This Mother’s Day I was treated by the children to a night away at Cowley Manor in the Cotswolds. My husband did well this year!
We first visited Cowley Manor last summer when Rufus was around five months old. Looking for a nice hotel set in the countryside that welcomed families and had spa facilities. The hotel had previously been highly recommended to us by some friends.
Cowley Manor is set in the beautiful countryside of Cowley in Gloucestershire. The hotel is a stunning Italianate stone country house close to Cheltenham. Set in 55 acres with its beautiful gardens and lake it is certainly a different take on the usual country house hotels. This funky and flamboyant hotel ticks all the boxes for me. From the photos I have taken you can see the interiors of the hotel. The comical papier-mâché ‘hunting trophies’, cowhide window seats to all the handmade furniture and fabrics designed for the hotel by British designers. It’s an interior lovers delight.
So pre Rufus my husband and I were always going away and have been lucky to stay in some really great hotels over the years. So it’s really nice to find these little gems. Funky hotels that will also cater for you and your little family too. I may have had a baby but I still want to get dressed up for cocktails and dinner. Go to the spa (even more so now) and have some treatments, but now with a toddler in tow.
So this Mothers Day we went back to Cowley and had a special Mothers Day lunch and stay with them. Shropshire to Cowley is generally around 1 1/2 hrs (depending on the M5) so thats quite good for us as Ru sleeps in the car. So its a nice easy journey with the little one. It was just the three of us on Sunday as Issy was with her mum and family.
We got there for 2pm and so just in time for lunch. Awaiting for us was their beautiful white washed oak dining room with lovely interiors, funky lights and a fire on the go which is always extremely inviting. A Mother’s Day gift bag was brought to the table filled with Green & Spring spa goodies which was a lovely touch. We ordered our 3 course lunch and Rufus had his when our starters came. This is always something I look for when dining out is how quickly they can get the child’s food out! You always know its a good place to dine when they say we will get the child’s food out first without you having to ask.
During our last visit Rufus hadn’t started weaning so I didn’t have to worry about ordering food for him. For his lunch on Sunday they brought him out a nice chicken dinner. Rushing as always, I had forgotten to bring his cutlery from home. I asked one of the waiters if they could bring me a tea spoon for him and out they came with a child’s cutlery set. These are the things that please me these days. It’s the little things that make a stay memorable for me.
Lunch was delicious. Starter’s and mains for me usually followed by a dessert as the food is so good here. However a certain little one was getting fidgety at the table so it was time to go. We definitely have a two hour window these days when dining out. The staff were great with him and made a fuss so he was in his element.
After lunch we checked in to our room. The lady on reception had booked us into room 21 situated in the main house. She said she had done this as it was a nice large room thinking it would be good for the little one to wander around in and she was right! Little Ru had a whale of a time going back and forth into the nice large bathroom to the bedroom and sitting room area. That kid can do some miles now!
To work off lunch Ru and I went for a walk in the grounds. A beautiful backdrop of Gloucestershire countryside with a lake and stream running through it. Lots of places for Rufus to run around.
C-Side at Cowley Manor offers an outdoor and indoor pool, gym and spa area. This was fantastic back in the summer a wonderful spot to relax in. Inspired by the natural beauty of the Cotswold countryside. C-Side offers a range of holistic treatments including therapeutic massages, advanced facials and speciality pregnancy treatments. Due to the family opening times we had just missed using the pool.
In the evening after putting Rufus to bed we had a relaxing evening and an early night. I’ve had a few bad nights with Rufus so needed to try and catch up on some sleep. So after my waterfall shower I flopped into the huge bed and settled down for the night. Rufus sleeping in our room in one of the travel cots provided by the hotel.
In the morning we were woken up to the gentle sound of birds outside. Oh and Rufus of course demanding his morning milk! Let me try and paint a realistic picture here for you guys! We opened our curtains to a gorgeous view of blooming magnolia out the window and cherry blossom. Such a pretty time of year. Not a bad start to a Monday I have to say.
Breakfast was served in the dining room and the chef very kindly made sure Rufus had some grated cheese on his scrambled eggs. The staff were so accommodating and wanted to ensure we were happy and well looked after. After a leisurely breakfast we had another stroll around the hotel and grounds and headed back home.
It It was less than 24 hours but it was just what this tired mummy needed a little mini break. I am really looking forward to going back again in the summer.
Cowley Manor has lots of events on over the year. Easter events, pop up shops and cinema evenings in their beautiful grounds to name but a few. A great hotel for families, for more details you can contact Cowley Manor on 01242 870900 or go to www.cowleymanor.com
